Craftsman style architecture began in the late 19th century and is among the more popular homes designs in the United States. This classic design style incorporates natural colors and emphasizes harmony with nature. Craftsman design focuses on simplicity, accentuates the beauty of hand craftsmanship, and reveals construction elements such as tails and gable brackets. 

Key Characteristics of the Craftsman Style in Residential Design

• Low-pitched, gabled roof featuring decorative supports
• Covered front porch with a welcoming feel
• Heavy use of natural materials and earthy tones
• Visible, sturdy looking tapered columns
• Large or prominent windows that accentuate natural light
• Exposed beams, brackets, and built-in wood features

The Craftsman style is characterized by horizontal lines, use of natural materials, low-pitched gable (triangular) roofs, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters and beams. This style typically features heavy tapered columns, patterned window panes, and a covered porch. Roofs are typically colored natural brown, red, or green while the body of the home is dark green, russet, or olive. 

Interiors utilize an abundance of wood, large trim profiles merged with wainscoting and walls often covered with floor-to-ceiling paneling. Floor plans are distinguished by built-in features such as cabinetry, window seats, bookcases, nooks, and prominent fireplaces. Rich earthy tones and natural finishes are used to accentuate the simple elegance of a beautifully hand crafted home.
